There are three main areas where dog training can be successful: the driveway, the house, and your neighborhood park. Focus, “trigger” reduction, and overall obedience control are essential to dog training. All of these disciplines are attainable once your dog has mastered the fundamentals of training.

Inside the home. The best place to begin training your dog is at home. It is recommended to use treats during the first dog training phase to condition your dog to general dog training commands. Inside the house, you will limit your dog’s exposure to major distractions and achieve the best initial training results. Try training in a quiet room with little background noise or distractions. As your dog’s focus and eye contact improve, move to a room with more noise to increase his attention span. Training commands to focus on at home will be: sit, leave it/take, leave it/good leave it, off, and stay.

On the driveway. The next step in improving your dog’s focus and intensity during dog training will take place in your driveway or just outside your home. This environment will now include more noise, distractions, scents, and motion to distract and create “triggers” for your dog. You should now start reducing the number of food treats used as a training reward and instead focus on more vocal affirmation and physical touch for praise conditioning. You will also begin using the “watch me” command. Place a treat next to your eye and say, “Watch me”. You will use this command to get your dog’s attention if there is a potential distraction in the field.

In the park. Finally, you can train your dog at a local park. The outdoor park environment will be the most distracting for your dog. You can expect to see playgrounds filled with children, bikes, skateboards, and other walking dogs. All of this “motion” in the park will create prey triggers for your dog, allowing all of your hard dog training command work at home and in the driveway to pay off! At this point, you will stop using any training treats unless absolutely necessary. The goal is for your dog to listen to you with the expectation of receiving only vocal affirmation or physical touch as a reward. All of your dog training command work can now be done while on a walk, providing your dog with more mental and physical stimulation in the field.
